On 26 June 2018 my brother got married in Cardigan, Wales. A beautiful summers day in the height of a heatwave. The day was truly amazing but I felt so uncomfortable in the heat. Two days after the weeding my brother sent a selection of the official photos to the family and I was totally shocked by how big I looked on some of the photos. The next day I joined slimming world!
My intention had been to join the local 3:30 Wednesday group around the corner from home in Littleover but I knew if I waited until then I’d find a reason not to so I joined the 9:30 Friday group in Chellaston instead. I stayed with Chellaston until after the school holidays and then moved to Heatherton in September 2018. We’re a lovely little group; very supportive and good fun and I look forward to seeing everyone each week.
I weighed in at 13 stone 10½ lbs, the heaviest I had ever been in my life. I set my initial target as 11 stone and got stuck in!
I’ve found the Slimming World plan life changing. It’s so easy to follow and it’s sensible. No faddy rules, very little weighing out of food and the recipe books are great. Basically, it’s just cooking lean and wholesome food in a healthy way and serving it with lots of lovely vegetables and fruit. I eat plenty, I never feel hungry and I’m enjoying cooking again – something I’d lost interest in.
As a result of following the plan I now rarely have migraines so I don’t need to prescription medication anymore and I have so much more energy. I used to have a constant pain in my right hip joint which has recently been diagnosed as a tear in my labrum (the cartilage around the hip joint). However, in the time it’s taken to find this out I’ve got to my target weight and I no longer get pain from it so the consultant agrees that for now I don’t need an operation to repair the tear.
During my journey I reduced my initial target from 11 stone to 10 stone 7lb and successfully achieved this on 3 March 2019. However, a few weeks later I decided to reduce it again to 9 stone 10lbs. On 3 July 2019 I achieved it! It took a bit longer than I had hoped to shift the last few pounds (being stuck at home for 3 months recovering from a hand operation didn’t help) but I’m so pleased I didn’t give up because I now feel amazing. I haven’t been this size since I was about 18 years old and at university. I’m now 45!
The highlight for me has been clearing my wardrobe of the shapeless tunic tops I used to buy to hide the bulges and replacing them with slim-fitting size 8-10 tops and skinny jeans 😊.
It’s definitely all been worth the 12 month investment.
